You don't want to do that because the program will lose all your prior year information for your business.
I assume you are in an Online account.
If you go into the return, Tax Tools shows on the left side
Once you click that, a drop-down opens and you can click Clear & Start Over
I tried the Clear & Start Over thing, but it told me I couldn't clear it. I was at the point of receiving the 6-digit code in order to file when I realized I was in the wrong account. Is there another way to clear it?
You can continue and file your son's return, but then you won't be able to use that account to file your return with a Schedule C.
The information from 2018 won't flow over to your 2019 return.
(You'll also be charged for the "Self-Employed" program that your son doesn't need to file his return)
Are you able to continue with the return and slowly delete your son's information and then enter yours?
Can you click on "Add a state" to stop the process and then remove his information and enter yours?
Can you select that you will file by mail, and then go back in and alter the return?
Below is a link to contact customer phone support, they might be able to help more than I can.
If you end up continuing and use this account to file your son's return, you might consider saving your 2018 tax file and transferring that to a new account to proceed with your 1040 with Schedule C.
Thanks for the reply. I won't actually be using that account to file the business taxes; we have an accountant for that. I file my son's because his is a 1040EZ, and I can handle that level of taxes. Haha. He already has his own Intuit/TurboTax account that I used to file his return last year. Since I haven't actually filed it from the business account, could I just restart it in his personal account and file it from there, or will it get flagged because it was already started in the wrong account?
To be clear, I have never filed taxes for the business with TurboTax (or at all, as 2020 is our first tax year), but I do use QuickBooks for the business with the same Intuit account. So there is no previous year data to be disrupted, but I would prefer to keep my son's returns all on his own account if possible.
I see, yes, as long as you DON"T e-file your son's return from the business account, you can use his account.
It won't be flagged by TurboTax. It would only be flagged (rejected) by the IRS if you try to e-file it from both accounts.
Perfect. Thank you. I will redo it and file from his account. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer this for me.
