Did you claim a dependent?  You need a qualifying dependent to claim Head of Household.  When you enter a dependent Turbo Tax will automatically switch you to Head of Household .

Here's a FAQ for Head of Household

Who is a qualifying person for Head of Household

No. You must file an amended return.   The IRS won't give you any free money or free adjustments, you have to put it in writing and sign your name to it.   Don't include proof when you file the amended return.  Sometimes the IRS will ask for verification later, but they usually don't.

Here are the general amending instructions.

Note that "head of household" does not mean you are the head of the family, head of the house, or main breadwinner.  It is a specific status, mostly for single parents.  To qualify, you must meet three tests:

1. You are unmarried, or separated from your spouse under specific conditions,

2. You pay more than half the cost of maintaining your household (rent, food, utilities, etc.),

3. You provide care in your home for a least one qualifying person, usually a child dependent, who lives with you for more than half the year.

If you are single and you list a qualifying dependent on your tax return, Turbotax will recommend head of household status.   If you did not claim HOH, it is possible you don't qualify.

to claim head of household you would have to include a qualifying person in your return. if you had, Turbotax would not have let you file as single. your lease has nothing to do with head of household.

here are the rules for clamming head of household. Turbotax should have asked similar questions.

here are the rules:

1) Did you have any dependents? – if no you cannot file as HOH.
2) If yes, was the dependent claimable solely because of a multiple support agreement - if yes you cannot file as HOH, if no was the dependent legally related to the taxpayer by blood - if no you cannot file as HOH.
3) Do you qualify as a surviving spouse because your spouse died in the preceding 2 years and you maintain a home for a child whom you are able to claim as a dependent whether you do or not - you can not file as HOH but as surviving spouse.
4) Were you a nonresident alien at any time during the year - if yes you cannot file as HOH.
5) If you were not legally wed on the last day of the year, see A, if you were then 6.
6) Were you legally wed to a non-resident alien at any time in 2022, if yes see A, if not then 7.
7) If legally married, were you legally separated at the end of 2022 under a decree of separate maintenance, if yes see A, if not then 8.
😎 Did you maintain separate living quarters from your spouse, if legally wed, for the last 6 months of 2022, if yes see A, if no you cannot file as HOH.

A. then was the dependent a married child of the taxpayer? if yes, will the dependent child file a joint return with their spouse? if yes you cannot file as HOH. If the dependent child was not married or if married will not file a joint return with their spouse then did the legally related dependent use the taxpayer’s household, for which the taxpayer paid at least ½ the cost, as their principal place of abode for more than ½ the year – then you can file as HOH.

if you do qualify, once the original return is fully processed, you will have to file an amended return.

@love1994-

were they listed on your tax return? there could be a number of tax credits missing (EITC and CTC) if you failed to list the dependents?

Also, it is surprising that if you used TT, it used SINGLE instead of HOH.  There are just too many questions that TT asks to end up at the wrong place.  if you have three dependents can you share some information on them?

is it possible that SINGLE is correct? for example, you have 3 children who lived with you ONLY from August - December.  You can not file HOH in that circumstance.

suggest using this link to confirm that HOH should have been the filing status.

Without any of your personal information like your email or SSN, please provide some details regarding the three dependents.   Who are they?   If, for instance, the dependents include a GF or BF, or your BF or GF's children, they do not qualify you to file as head of household.   Tell us who the three dependents are and how they are related to you.
