Question

HSA mistaken distribution

Hello,

My bank will be issuing a corrected 1099-SA to the IRS, but said the IRS won't get it until the end of May or beginning of June.

I did not send in my taxes yet. Should I request an extension, or should I mail my tax form with a copy of the corrected "re-contribution" form attached?

Thank You very much!

If you know the amount of the Distribution that will be on your 'Corrected 1099-SA' you can enter that in TurboTax and indicate 'corrected 1099-SA' and still Efile your return.

Or, as you stated, you could request an Extension and paper-file your return later with the corrected form.

    Thank you for your reply.

As it turns out, my bank didn't actually send a corrected 1099-SA that I know of, but they sent a corrected contribution form due to the mistaken distribution money put back into the account. I had already contributed the max for the year, but they listed the mistake amount on a line called "Other" on that form.

Do you know if I can still click on the "corrected" box for the 1099-SA in Turbo Tax?

    Thanks again!

If they are not sending a corrected 1099-SA to the IRS, you do not want to check the box.
