How to make filing status blank

the filing status was preselected as single but the site wants me to leave it blank, however, there is no way to unselect one status without choosing another.

Not sure why you think it wants you to leave your filing status blank-----what is making you think that? You must choose a filing status. You do that in My Info. The choices are Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, Head of Household, or Qualifying Widow
