Many TT entry boxes, when I click on them, show the entry is "calculated". Some of these calculated entry boxes, when double-clicked, will open up a popup that shows the source of the "calculated" amount.
Many "calculated" boxes showing amounts do NOT open when double-clicking them. Is there a way to go to the source entries for these "calculated" boxes?
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
look for the "magnifying glass'" next to a field when you mouse over it.
If that , or double click doesn't work, the field is just arithmetical;.
If you are talking about some entries you see in the actual Forms themselves?
(Windows Computers...desktop software)
IF it is not a colored entry box/line....just black on white
and
IF there is no magnifying glass when you click on the number,
........try rt-clicking on the number and select "Data Source" from the pop-up menu.
Even then, it doesn't always go to a place that is really useful....sometimes you have to just read the instructions showing on the form for that particular line
Please give a couple of examples of specific calculated entries that you want to see the source for. Give the form number or name and the line number.
I assume you are looking at these entries in forms mode. Are you using TurboTax in Windows or on a Mac? What year is the TurboTax software that you are looking at?
This is my mini version of a tutorial that should be in the downloaded program:
Forms Mode lets you view and make changes to your tax forms "behind the scenes."
If you're adventurous, you can even prepare your return in Forms Mode, but we don't recommend it. You may miss obscure credits and deductions you qualify for, and you may forget to report things that will come back and haunt you later.
Forms Mode is exclusively available in the TurboTax CD/Download software. It is not available in TurboTax Online.
If you want to play around with different figures and tax scenarios without affecting your original return you can ….
Once you have filed shut off the auto updater function and save the return and .taxfile.
It's always a good idea to make a backup copy of your tax data file, in case your original gets lost or corrupted. Here's how:
If you make changes to your original tax return file, repeat these steps to ensure your original and backup copies are in-synch.
AND save it as a PDF so you have access to a copy even if you don’t have the program still installed and operational :
AND protect the files :
*** Other clues to the downloaded program ***
In the forms mode ... double click or right click on a box on a form to data source it ... sadly it doesn't work on all boxes.
When you look at an onscreen tax form using Forms Mode, you might wonder why one figure is blue and the one next to it is red or black.
These colors indicate the source of that data.
Color | Meaning |
Blue | You entered this data, either in the interview or Forms Mode. |
Black | The program entered this data or calculated this amount. |
Red | This data has either been overridden or is invalid (for example, a ZIP code that doesn't exist). |
Red italics | You marked this amount as estimated. |
Black italics | The program calculated this amount from an amount you marked as estimated. |
Purple | This information has supporting details. |
Aquamarine | This data was transferred over from last year. |
Green | This data was imported from Quicken or QuickBooks. |
Yellow fields (Windows) | Yellow fields allow user input. Anything you enter here shows up in blue. |
I'm on a Mac.
Right now I'm in TT Home & Business 2016. Some examples of "calculated" amounts:
Schedule A - Medical Expenses Worksheet, line 2.o, "Other self-employed health insurance not deducted as an adj to income"
Schedule E - Supplemental Income and Loss - Part I - Income, line 3
Schedule A - Medical Expenses Worksheet, line 2.o, "Other self-employed health insurance not deducted as an adj to income"
This one is a bit tricky but there should be a corresponding worksheet for the Self Employed Health insurance deduction to see the calculation ... basically whatever you could not use on the form 1040 as an adjustment to income is added to your Sch A medical expenses. This could have been adjusted if you had ACA insurance and you either had to repay some or all of the advance premium tax credit OR got more of the credit.
Schedule E - Supplemental Income and Loss - Part I - Income, line 3 This is something you entered directly or it came from a worksheet you requested ... go to the step by step mode to review the entries you made.
SteamTrain; I'm on a Mac.
I haven't found that right-clicking on a "calculated" box does anything. Should right-clicking on a Mac bring up a select data source choice?
Is there another way, on a Mac, to get to the data source?
Only a couple experts in here use a MAC. @macuser_22 might know.

I didn't think a MAC had a rt-click option. You might try clicking on the box/field and then checking various choices up in the menu bar at the top of the screen.....that's where I think they put some of the selections for a MAC since rt-click isn't available.
I don't use a Mac either. According to a note I have from a few years ago, the Data Source function is not available in the Mac software. QuickZoom is available for some entries. If an entry doesn't have QuickZoom, the program help might have some information about the entry. Otherwise you have to look at the description of the entry on the form, and possibly the IRS instructions for the form.
For some reason, many years ago, TurboTax did away with "Data Source" on the Mac version and replaced it with double click on the field in question that is supposed to go to the form that it came from, but that only works for some files and does not show all the possible sources like Windows does.
I have complained about this many times but it falls on deaf ears. So it is what it is. If double click does not work then you are on your own to find it.
Yes, Mac has right-click functions such as "show page source", "save as", and "print page".
I looked in the main menus and didn't see a selection that would take me to the source of a "calculated" box.
Thanks so much for trying to help.

Because there isn't one. See my post above yours.
