Is it still true that no efile extension from desktop version turbotax?
That's correct. But you can create an online account and efile from there. To get started, click this link.
Hi everyone,
Just an FYI: It was a nightmare trying to file an extension with IRS and the 2 states I needed to file an extension for. TurboTax would only print form 4868 and one of the state extension and told me to mail it. For the other state, TurboTax told me not to worry about it. After spending 3 hours trying to figure out how to get TurboTax to e-file the extension for me for all 3 (searching TurboTax help and the community boards), it was easier to file it directly with each of the tax authorities involved. 20 minutes later, extensions done with a confirmation from each tax authority.
I am writing to let people know that if you have the same issue, it's faster and gives more piece of mind, go through the tax states for IRS and your state(s).
Hope this is useful to you.

For Fed Tax Extension, I did it on IRS website when you paid 2020 via extension. It says, for Form 4868 is not needed to be mail in. Is that your experience? thanks for the reply.
Yes. The same.
TurboTax had not had such issues with their UI in several years, but there seems to be issues this year.
from Extension of Time To File Your Tax Return | Internal Revenue Service (irs.gov)
Get an extension when you make a payment
You can also get an extension by paying all or part of your estimated income tax due and indicate that the payment is for an extension using Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS), or a credit or debit card. This way you won’t have to file a separate extension form and you will receive a confirmation number for your records.

Go to this TurboTax website for e-filing a Form 4868 extension request - https://turbotax.intuit.com/irs-tax-extensions/
Extra fee after having bought the TT desktop?
There is no fee to file an extension.

@AnotherDrone
this is now the 4th thing I want to do with Turbo Tax and cant do it.
Why the **bleep** do they say on their support that you can file an extension but you cant actually do it.
Only program I know that has less functionality each year.
If someone has suggestions for other tax software, please post here
Have you tried following the instructions in this FAQ to file an extension? If so and you are unable to, please let us know here (without disclosing personal identifying information) so we can further assist you.
Yes, I followed the instructions, which very clearly stated that e-filing an extension was not possible with desktop version. Not sure why - its basically false advertising.
Also, why do you make it so hard to print out state EZ forms for estimated taxes. Cant print them out until the state taxes are done, but cant complete state taxes until fed is done, so if need to file an extension its impossible to obtain the form from Intuit. Highly unintuitive. Worthless program.
I am waiting for answers to what other tax prep software is better than TurboCrap. Its suppose to be easier to to use over time, not harder. Other than auto-filling last years data, the entire software program is worthless.
Not even going to get into the issues related to uploading data from my broker. Had to fill in everything by hand, again. Hours of time after messages of "file too big". Worthless, no functionality! Had to hand type practically everything. Its really worthless. Just a headache
