There is not a minimal amount of charitable donations that you need to itemize your return. You just need your total itemized expenses (charitable donations, medical expenses, property taxes, mortgage interest) to be greater than your standard donation.
This year, you can take the Standard Deduction along with a cash donation deduction of up to $300 for single or $600 for married filing jointly. In this situation you do not have to itemize.
