How do I remove a deduction I don't want?

Easy ... go back to the MY INFO section and indicate you are a full time student to make you ineligible for the credit.

Better yet keep the credit and file for free somewhere else ...  https://www.irs.gov/filing/free-file-do-your-federal-taxes-for-free

Go to My Info and say you were a student.  That trick will stop the software from triggering an upgrade for the saver credit.

Or...

-Use this IRS site for other ways to file for free.  There are 8  free software versions available from the IRS Free File site

How do I remove a deduction I don't want?

To remove your Retirement Savings Contribution Credit information in TurboTax Online:

  1. Select Tax Home in the left pane
  2. On the  Hi, let's keep working on your taxes! screen, scroll down and select the Show more dropdown to the right of Deductions & Credits
  3. Select  Review/Edit
  4. Scroll down and select Edit/Add to the right of Retirement Savings Contribution Credit
  5. Select  Continue on the Let’s see if you qualify for the Saver’s Credit screen
  6. On the  Tell us if [you] were a full-time student in 2023 screen, indicate Yes, then select Continue

Don't worry, you're not perjuring yourself by making this statement.  The IRS doesn't see this response -- it simply disqualifies you for the credit within the TurboTax program.

To qualify, you need to meet each of these requirements:

  • You're not a full-time student
  • You're age 18 or older
  • No one else claims you as a dependent on their 2023 tax return
  • Your adjusted gross income (AGI) isn't greater than
    •     $73,000 if Married Filing Jointly
    •     $54,750 if Head of Household (with qualifying person)
    •     $36,500 if Single, Married Filing Separately, or Surviving Spouse with dependent child
