How do I print a rejected e-filed return?

This answer only applies to incomplete returns. My federal return was rejected after e-filing and notes it cannot be e-filed. Do I just print the whole tax file? Or is there more documents I need to mail in?

How do I print a rejected e-filed return?

Also, I was just given incorrect information by a TurboTax specialist. She gave me this address to mail my 1040-X: PO Box 7704, SF, CA, 94120-7704. That is not the address on irs.gov for the 1040-X. I then found on their site  that the SF PO boxes were permanently closed January 1, 2022.

How do I print a rejected e-filed return?

@hdquilter It is unclear what you are trying to do.  First you asked about a rejected return and how to print it.  Then you are asking about a 1040X.   What are you doing?   You do not amend a rejected return.  Amending is a special process you only use for a return that was accepted and fully processed, but that had some mistakes or missing information.  To do that you use a 1040X.   You do not use a 1040X to fix a rejected return.

You either "fix" the mistakes on the rejected return if you can, or you print sign and mail it.   You did not tell us why the return was rejected.

You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.

Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed.  Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead. What is the rejection code or rejection message?

If it was rejected for AGI—-be aware that many 2021 returns took so long for the IRS to process that your 2021 AGI might not be in the IRS system.   Try using zero instead.

If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year.  The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.

If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.

I clicked on “amend” by mistake

How do I print a rejected e-filed return?

The rejected return was a 1040-X and noted "This return is ineligible to be filed electronically." There is nothing wrong with it. I can download and print my return, but apparently since it was already e-filed, I no longer have access to any instructional pages as to what attachments may be needed and where to mail the return. The specialist apparently is using old information.

@hdquilter The fact that you were referring to e-filing an amended return is the piece of the puzzle that was missing from your original question.   What year did you amend?  If you amended a 2021 or earlier year it has to be mailed; it cannot be e-filed.
