An extension request for tax year 2023 had to be filed on or before April 15, 2024.
It is too late to request an extension. The last day you could request an extension was April 15, 2024. So---now your return is just late. If you do not owe or are getting a refund, there is no penalty for filing past the deadline. If you owe tax due, you are subject to late penalties and interest.
If you are out of the country, you automatically have a 2 month extension, but to claim it, you must file by mail and attach a written explanation. You can also claim an additional 4 month extension to October 15, but you must file form 4868 by mail before June 15.
However, if you are not out of the country, the deadline to request an extension was April 15. You can't apply for one by mail or online after that date.
