How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

I entered my $487 as you described here for federal. In my MN return I included the $487 on the Frontline Worker Pay page but when I go to file my MN return I get an error:

"Schedule M1M: Frontline Worker Pay should be blank. To qualify for subtraction in Minnesota you must report this payment as income on your federal return."

I did report report the payment as income on my federal return, so why am I getting this error message? It won't let me file the MN return unless I delete the $487 I entered.

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

I followed the steps outlined by @ErnieS0  to report the Minnesota Frontline Worker pay.  The pay was taxable on the Federal tax return and not taxed on the Minnesota tax return.

  • Down the left side of the screen, click Federal.
  • Down the left side of the screen, click Wages & Income.
  • Click Show more to the right of Less Common Income.
  • Select Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A.
  • Select Other reportable Income.
  • As a description enter MN Frontline Worker Pay.

In the Minnesota tax return, remove the income at the screen Frontline Worker Pay.

Are you able to view the Federal 1040 to see whether the income was correctly reported?

View the entries at Tax Tools / Tools / View Tax Summary / Preview my 1040.

View the entries at Tax Tools / Print Center / Print, save or preview this year's return / Include government and TurboTax worksheets.

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

I think I know what I did. Federally, under Misc. Income, I reported my Frontline Worker Pay under "Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099" not "Other reportable income".

Another question - why would I remove the income on my MN return on the Frontline Worker Pay screen? "To qualify for subtraction in Minnesota you must report this payment as income on your federal return." Since I did report on my federal return (though seems like not exactly in the right place) shouldn't I qualify for subtraction?

Will I have submit an amended federal return before I can submit my MN state return then?

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

Yes.  You qualify for the subtraction on your Minnesota (MN) return.

No, you do not need to amend your federal return. You reported the income on your federal return according to your information, the question is whether you removed it from your MN return.

Be sure to take the adjustment on your MN tax return before you submit it.  To remove MN Frontline Worker Pay from your MN return:

  1. Continue in Minnesota until you see the screen “Frontline Worker Pay”
  2. Enter the Payment Amount (Do not enter an amount unless the payment was included in your federal income)

I don't actually want to remove this correct? I entered the payment amount because I did include it as federal income. But I can't submit unless I delete this $487.

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

No, you are correct.  Do not delete the amount there.  You need to go back to your federal interview and delete the amount from the topic "Other income not on a W2 or 1099" and then re-enter it as "Other Reportable income."   You federal tax will not change as already filed; you are just moving it on your copy.

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

@DMarkM1 MY HERO!!! Thank you so much!

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

Those instructions worked fine yesterday 2/9/23 but the Intuit Turbo Tax update applied today 2/10/23 has caused it to reject the Federal entry (once, then it recovered) AND the MN deduction of that amount.

It tells me I have to first enter it as income on the Federal, which I have done.

Interestingly, I had been ready to file my taxes, and perhaps I could right now, but only because I did NOT save the file after the update occurred. If I go back and just zoom thru Federal Income and then on to the MN calculations, it will still fail.

So far, I don't save it in case it never gets fixed - I MAY still be able to file. The deduction on MN will have no effect on my taxes this year since I have so many deductions.

Thanks

Which instructions are you referring to?   If you are still having an issue with the Frontline Pay from MN, delete the entry from the federal return.   Then re-enter it in the Miscellaneous Income Section and then make sure to subtract it on the MN state subtraction screen.   In the federal section, go to Less Common Income >> Miscellaneous Income >> Other Reportable Income.   Enter the amount and a description (MN Frontline Worker Pay).   Then go to the state return and click through until you come to the Frontline Pay question and enter the same amount you entered on the federal return.  Submit your return again.   If it rejects - it should not, let us know what the rejection code is.  @tatu9

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

Thanks for your reply. I just went back 3 different times and made sure I was doing it you are showing and it’s been correct. The amounts  on both are the same. It keeps giving me the error message every time.

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

I just looked at my schedule 1 in the forms section.  I think I see where the issue is but cannot figure how to correct it. The MN FWP is entered into line 8z but it’s not transferred onto line 9. Line 9 is blank but I think it should show that amount there. Line 9 should be everything totaled from 8a through 8z. Then line 10 should total everything from line 1-9. It does not include.

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

You are correct.  Line 9 should be a total of 8a-z on the Schedule 1 and added to the other lines to get line 10.  Try this.

  1. Go back to the "Other Reportable Income" topic
  2. Delete the MN FWP entries
  3. Continue to complete that topic.
  4. Exit/sign out of TurboTax
  5. Clear your browser cache.  Here is a link with instructions if needed.
  6. Sign back in to TurboTax
  7. Return to the "Other Reportable Income" topic
  8. Re-enter the MN FWP

How do I enter Minnesota Frontline Worker Pay?

So, is this the final answer that I can submit the taxes? To file the MN frontline worker pay under the 1099-A line. The IRS statement is vague from 2/10, they list 21 states but not MN. Thanks
