How do I answer line F on IL-1040-X?

I am amending my 2020 federal tax return because I had checked "Yes" when asked if someone else could claim me, and would be claiming me on their 2020 return, however I should have checked "No" because I was only a full time student for 4 months of the calendar year. My parents filed their return and did not claim me, so I need to fix that. Once I made the change, it's taking me to my Illinois State Return, and saying I need to answer line F, but I do not understand the question at all. It says "Check the box that identifies why you are making this change." and the three options are "Federal change accepted on", "NOL accepted on", and "State change". I'm confused because my federal change hasn't even been sent yet, so I don't know how I would have a date for that? I don't know what NOL means, and this isn't a state change so if someone can please help me understand this, I would really appreciate it!

How do I answer line F on IL-1040-X?

you can't file IL-1040-X until the federal 1040-X is approved. then on your IL 1040-x, you enter the

date the federal change was accepted.    also Illinois requires additional documentation which will require you to mail in the amended form

What must I attach to my Form IL-1040-X?
If you are filing Form IL-1040-X because you filed a federal Form 1040X to report a federal change other
than an NOL carryback, you must include a copy of that form and proof of federal finalization.
If your federal change resulted in an overpayment, proof of federal finalization includes a copy of the notification you received from the IRS stating that they accepted the changes shown on your federal Form 1040X; e.g., a refund check, “Statement of Account,”

as to whether you can claim yourself even if your parents don't claim you requires that certain conditions be met

my understanding is you are a dependent if you meet the test below even if not claimed.

You could be claimed as a qualifying child if all these tests are met
• You have the same principal abode as the other party for more than ½ the tax year. Temporary absences like for school are ignored
• If not a full-time student (any part of any 5 months – in a letter ruling the IRS allowed the month the student registered even though classes didn’t start until the next month), you’re under 19 at the end of the tax year. If a full-time student, you're under 24 at end of the tax year.
• you haven't provided over ½ your own support
• you didn't file a joint return unless there was no tax liability but merely filing jointly to facilitate refund of taxes withheld or estimates paid
Or as you could be a qualifying relative if all these tests are met
You’re related to the other person or, if not, lived with the other party for the entire year and
• your gross income for 2021 is less than $4,350
• the other party provided over ½ your support
• you aren't a qualifying child of another taxpayer

How do I answer line F on IL-1040-X?

The problem I’m having is that it’s taking me right to the IL-1040-X before I even submit the 1040-X. I’m not sure if it’s just something wrong in turbotax, or if I should just do all of this through the mail.

How do I answer line F on IL-1040-X?

You are changing your status on the state return so mark the box for state change. The federal boxes are not correct for your situation.

IL 1040XInstructions say:

Line F – Check the box that describes your change. The date needed for federal changes that resulted in an overpayment is the date you received a federal finalization notice from the IRS stating that they have accepted your change either by paying a refund or by final assessment, agreement, or judgment, not the date you filed your federal Form 1040X. federal changes that resulted in a tax increase is the date you filed your federal Form 1040X and paid the tax due. Failure to provide this date could result in an assessment of a late-payment penalty
