What constitutes a household member for tax filing purposes?  For example, I have an adult living with me until they can get back on their feet, they are currently unemployed.  I am not claiming them on my taxes as a dependent.  Would they be considered a household member?

And is a mental disability considered the same as a physical disability?

Not sure why you are asking about a "household member" if you are not claiming them as a dependent.   There is no place on a tax return to enter a "household member" that you are not claiming as a dependent.   What are you trying to do?   Why are you asking about mental and physical disabilities?

Because they are filing their own tax return and they are being asked to enter all other household members income. They are not currently working due to disability. I’m asking about a household member because I’d like to know if I’m considered a household member since they are temporarily staying with me.

Are they preparing a federal or state tax return?  Are they trying to claim you as a dependent.  Please clarify.

They are preparing both, but it’s for the state tax return.

It’s for the Sales Tax Relief Credit that is available for low-income residents, which may apply if your household income is below a certain threshold.

They are not working due to mental health issues. Would the mental health issues qualify as a physical disability? I’m thinking no, but I’d like to confirm

Mental health disability is not the same as a physical disability.

The rules for what constitutes a household can vary based on the governmental agency.  Which state?  What is your relationship to them?  Who is supporting them if they do not work?

Thank you for that confirmation.

it’s for the state of Oklahoma and they have government assistance currently to help them financially.
