Hello. I wanted to verify the railroad tier 1 tax withholding on my W2. TurboTax's Help section stated that I multiply Box 3 with 0.062 (6.2%) however, my Box 3 is empty.

I read on another thread that this should be calculated using Box 1 which to me makes more sense. Can anyone please confirm?

On a RR  W-2 form boxes 3 & 4 should be empty and that is correct ... do not try to enter any figures at all ... if the program requires a figure simply use a zero.  The RR handles the SS/pension differently than the non RR world.

Box 1 might be correct, but might well be wrong because of some other pretax contributions that might occur that reduce the box 1 amount.

Box 14 should also contain an entry for your RR Retirement "Compensation"....it is that $$ amount you multiply by 0.062 to see if RR Tier1 taxes are correct.  (Also, and entry in box 14 in another line)
