Head of household with girlfriend

I am currently living with my girlfriend (who has no income). She has a son that is 14 and lives with us also. She is the only legal guardian of him. Is it possible to claim head of household with the 2 of them. I know I can claim them both as dependents. And are there any other credits I can claim since I support the child?

No.   Neither one of them is related to you, so they cannot be qualified dependents for you to file Head of Household.  If they lived with you for the whole year, and GF had less than $4400 of income you may be able to claim them for the $500 credit for other dependents.  You do not get child tax credit or earned income for GF's child.

If you qualify as Head of Household, when you enter your marital status (single or married filing separately) into MyInfo, and then enter your qualifying dependent, TurboTax will offer HOH as your filing status.

Head of household with girlfriend

As a follow-up to the post from @xmasbaby0, had the child been your adopted child, then you might have qualified for head of household filing status provided the other requirements for a qualifying child had been met.  The requirements for a qualifying child are as follows:

  •  The child must be your biological or adopted child, stepchild, foster child, sibling, step sibling, half sibling, or a descendant (child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc.) of one of these relatives.
  • The child must have lived within your home for more than six months during the tax year.
  • The child needs to be younger than you.
  • As of the end of the tax year, the child must be under 19 if he is not a student, or under 24 if he is a full-time college student.
  • The child must not have paid for more than half of his living expenses during the tax year.

Had the child met the above requirements, then such child would have been a qualifying child for purposes of claiming head of household status.  Below is a link to a TurboTax article that explains the requirements for head of household filing status.
