Are you using one of the 2024 TurboTax desktop editions for Windows? If so, follow this procedure -
Save your tax return and exit the TurboTax program
Right click on the TurboTax icon
Click on Properties
Click on the Compatibility tab
Check the box Run this program as an administrator
Click on Apply and OK
Start the TurboTax program and see if the problem persists.
I fought this for 2 days, I entered 6 1099-R forms, none were duplicates but TT would not let me beyond this page, saying there were duplicate 1099-R forms. I called support, they had no idea how to correct the problem & told me file manually by mail. After reading many posts by TT users I tried everything that was suggested because TT would not let me beyond the error page saying "duplicate 1099-R. Here is what I did and it worked:
1) slightly change the name of the financial institution or break up the address in the two lines on the form of
1099-R's from the same institution.
2) change the amount of your distribution by a few cents, if you received $2500. change it to $2499.75
3) enter a date in box 13
4) enter an account # on the form
5) change the last digit of the zip code so it looks like a different financial institution, these will have no effect
on your form
6) go to box 16, the state distribution & enter the same amount as you entered above in box 1
After doing all these things, TT accepted my 1099-R forms, I don't know which ones really mattered, but do
them all just to be sure. I filed electronically, everything was accepted.
TTX was working fine, Microsoft sent an upgrade and now I can not access TTX. Have reinstalled TTX, reversed M upgrade, restarted, and run out of ideas. Anyone else getting message "looks like we've run into an error." No hint as to what err, all suggested fixes (few that they were) tried to no avail.
What the hell Turbo Tax. I paid for this program and cannot finish taxes I already started.
My issue was paying for state filing and it charged my credit card but the software glitched and now it wants me to pay again with similar results. Tried calling support but apart from starting over on a different Mac with a clean install and paying again there does not seem to be straightforward solution.
When paying for state filing, a payment window opens where you enter your payment data. Once the payment is accepted, the window closes and you're back in TurboTax.
It sounds like you're not making a clean connection with the billing servers. Have you tried disabling your anti-virus programs? Here's How to Turn Off Anti-Virus Programs.
If you Contact TurboTax Support and give 'billing' as your reason for the call, you can get a refund of duplicate charges.
I am a long time customer, and I can't get any help. The software is just not processing the information correctly this year. This is the worse year I have ever had!!
It is reporting funds paid to me from my W2 from my state as taxes I paid to the state. Thus it thinks I am due a refund when more likely I owe. Not sure I trust its calculation of my taxes..
Please clarify your question.

As I have said a few times now already, the support and technical quality of the 2024 product is terrible. I tried and tried to make it work and finally just gave up. My son told me to cross compare one the products list on the IRS website (he chose FreeTaxUSA), I laughed and said I don't qualify and he said neither did he. He then told me it just switches you to the standard version if you don't qualify and offers you free federal filing if you also file your state taxes which I have to do anyway. The comparison showed that the IRS recommended product solved all the issues and actually corrected the amount that TurboTax was indicating that I owed for MN state taxes and those two issues still have not been resolved by TurboTax. It cost me $15 to file MN taxes electronically and federal was free. No other hidden fees for state filing or complex federal forms. Farewell TurboTax after years and years of use and helping others with their filings and TurboTax questions. I will never look back.
Were you able to import data from prior year's Turbo Tax file or did you have to start from scratch in the new program you opted for?
You can import a PDF and I would say it saved maybe 30% of the effort to put in the new data. However, next year that will improve since I will use the same product. I also found it much more refreshing although not being able to import from financial institutions adds a bit more work. To not have any errors or issues with updates I had this year was a blast of fresh air.
thank you for the response, much appreciated
With latest update of TTAX home Deluxe with CA state tax as of 3/25/25, logging in as administrator was required to access my state step-by-step entry page which was accessible without that type of login in previous versions of the software.
