My husband passed in 2021.  What status do I use for 2022 and what is the standard deduction does it have?

    So sorry for your loss.   For 2021 you were allowed to file a joint return.   For 2022, you will file as Single, or if you still have a qualified child dependent you can file as a qualified widow.

     

    If you file Single, create a new online account for your return so that using an old account you used to use for joint returns does not cause filing errors for you.

    2022 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS

     

    SINGLE $12,950  (65 or older + $1750)

     

    MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $12,950  (65 or older + $1750)

     

    MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $25,900  (65 or older + $1400 per spouse)

     

    HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD  $19,400  (65 or older +$1750)

     

    Legally Blind + $1750

     

     

    If you are able to file as a qualified widow, you get the married filing jointly standard deduction amount.

    On your 2022 tax return, if you do not have any children as dependents, you will be filing as Single if you have not remarried.

     

    Standard deductions for 2022

    • Single - $12,950 add $1,750 if age 65 or older
    • Married Filing Separately - $12,950 add $1,400 if age 65 or older
    • Married Filing Jointly - $25,900 add $1,400 for each spouse age 65 or older
    • Head of Household - $19,400 add $1,750 if age 65 or older
