Can I omit including details since it makes no difference in his refund and use the free version of TurboTax? Paying wipes out his entire refund

I would not be comfortable omitting income. See if he can use IRS Free File.

No, if you are filing a tax return, you must include all income from all sources regardless of whether or not it makes a difference on the return.
