Filing a 1040-X for new 1099-R after original filing

Already filed and received 2024 federal and VA state refunds  Received a new 1099-R, in the mail, with a value in box 1 but nothing in boxes 2a or 2b.  Code 6 in box 7.  Do I need to file a 1040-X ?

Filing a 1040-X for new 1099-R after original filing

It is too soon to amend a 2024 tax return.   You have to wait until it has been fully processed by the IRS.  Sometimes the IRS catches and corrects mistakes you made.   And the Form 1040X you will need is not available until mid-February.  Amending too soon can cause confusion and long delays.

Possibly, A code 6 in box 7 of a 1099-R is for a

Section 1035 exchange (a tax-free exchange of life insurance, annuity, qualified long-term care insurance, or endowment contracts).

  • This will typically not have an effect on your Federal tax return.
  • However, it may have an effect in your state.
