Federal e-file failed to transmitting.

The federal e-file failed to transmitting. It requires to check the entry on how many days rented out per year for my rental property. I filled in the correct number, the same number used the work sheet. Then I tried the e-file the federal tax. Somehow the program doesn’t like the number I put in. It failed again. I have tried to update the program several times and the transmitting process still failed.Any help?

Federal e-file failed to transmitting.

Did you rent the property all year? If so, did you check that box? If not, did you also enter personal use days (this is uncommon)? If so, is the total of rental days and personal days less than or equal to 365?

Run Federal Review / Smart Check again and see if the software provides more information on the e-file error. In some cases, Smart Check will bring up an embedded window of the form in question, which helps you check where the issue actually lies.

Thank you Patricia V

Yes, the number of days I used is 365 in both Schedule E work sheet and “check this entry”. I also went to Smart check. The program asked the same question. That is how many days you rented out your property. I typed in 365. At the end I click the transmit the e-file to both federal and state tax returns.  The program went to “check this entry” again. I typed in 365 again. The transmission of the e-files failed again. Like infinite “Do Loop”. It must be a simple correction of the program I guess. Thank you so much for your help.

It depends. When you are in the rental activity did you select that it was rented all year? It may be that simple so double check this information in your return. TurboTax will automatically enter 365 days if the correct answers are indicated.

  1. With your TurboTax Online or TurboTax Desktop return open do the following:
  2. Search (upper right) > Type rentals > Click the Jump to.. link
  3. Edit beside your rental activity > Select Edit beside Rental Property Info
  4. Select Edit under Days Rented > answer 'Yes, on the screen 'Was Rental A rented every single day in 2025?'
  5. Select 'Yes, it always was under 'Was it always rented at a fair price similar to other properties in your area?'.
  6. Continue until you are back to the screen 'Review your rental property info' > Scroll to click 'Looks good'
  7. Scroll to select 'Done'.
  8. Continue through your tax return to the point of Federal review, and forward to file.
    • Steps may be slightly different in TurboTax Desktop but all the same questions will appear.

Thank you Dianne. I went through your suggestions. I can’t find Days Rented in Rental Properties Info. section. Very strange!

Any other advices? Thanks in advance.

Federal e-file failed to transmitting.

Please confirm what software you are using (TurboTax Online or TurboTax Desktop) and if you like you can send a token.

If you would like to send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information it would help.  If you would like to do this, here are the instructions:  (Don't forget to give us the state)

TurboTax Online:

Open your return -Go to the menu panel on the left side of your return and select Tax Tools.

  1. Then select Tools below Tax Tools.
  2. A window will pop up which says Tools Center.
  3. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent.
  4. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.
  5. Reply to this thread with your Token number and your state. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.

TurboTax Desktop:

If you like, you can send a copy of your return that will be scrubbed to eliminate your personal data by using these steps:

  1. Click on Online in the top left menu of TurboTax Desktop for Windows
  2. Select 'Send Tax File to Agent'* > Follow the prompts to reach the token number.
    • Enter your email used for TurboTax > Enter your code > Send
  3. Write down or send an image of your token number and state then place in this issue.
  4. We can then review your exact scenario for a solution.
  5. Please also tell us any states included in the return. This is necessary for us to view the return.
    • *If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, 'Send Tax File to Agent')

We will be able to see exactly what you are seeing and we can determine what exactly is going on in your return to provide you with a resolution.

Thanks again Dianne.

One more question: in Smart Check to fix errors. The program asked “Check This Entry” to input the number of days rented. I input 365 in the box and hit continue button. Somehow the program doesn’t remember this fix.
anyway I will follow your instructions to send the file to you by taking out our personal information.
