I completed my return, with refund expected, but spouse needs ITIN. Turned in tax return along with W7 Form and documents at local IRS Office and they mailed it to Austin. Results may take 13 weeks or longer for processing, which is past April tax deadline. Do I still need to file for an extension? Or do I just sit and wait?

No, if you sent in your return with the W7 form, then you have already filed your return. You do not need to file an extension. When the ITIN and return are processed, if you are due a refund, then you will receive the refund.
If you will be receiving a tax refund with the 2024 tax return then there are no penalties for filing the tax return after the due date.
If you have taxes owed on the 2024 tax return, those taxes have to be paid on or before April 15, 2025 to avoid a late payment penalty.
You can file an extension request so that you will have until October 15, 2025, but taxes owed still have to be paid on 04/15/2025. The extension is only for filing the tax return, not an extension to for the tax payment.
Thank you.
