Employer sent me corrected value for box 20 in an email. Is it okay to file as W2 has a different value or does W2 need to be corrected ?

Will return get rejected/audited if value in box 20 is different from what is in W2 ?

What is Box 20 on a W-2?
Box 20 is the name of the locality where you are paying the tax in box 19. If you have information in those boxes, you will need that income used in a return for that locality.

Since this does not affect your US Federal tax, I do not think the IRS will check it. It only matters to the "locality" collecting tax.

Q.  Does W2 need to be corrected ?

A. Probably not.

It does not need to be corrected for purposes of filing you federal return and most state returns.  If you need to file a local return, it depends on the details of the correction and what locality you are filing for.

Thank you the responses. Employer replied back that they didn't see a need to update the W2 and I can just use the box 20 value from the email (in quotes below) v/s what is in the W2.

e.g.

"Transit Authority" instead of JeffCn (W2 value)

"School Boards Tax" instead of JeffCn (W2 value)

"Jeffery County"  instead of JeffCn (W2 value)

What state are you in. Google can't find a "Jeffery" county.

As long as you don't need to file a local tax return, it doesn't matter.

If you do need to file and there is withholding in box 17, on any of those three W-2 lines, you may have a problem and you may need to attach an explanation, including a copy of the employer's e-mail

It's Jefferson County, Louisville, KY.

Employer sent me 3 pages of W-2, each with a single row for 18-20 per page.

The first page has all boxes 15-20 populated. The next 2 pages have values in 15,18,19,20.

The problem started because the 3 pages for Boxes 18-20 had differing amounts in box 18 and same value of "JeffCn" in box 20. When i added 3 rows in Turbo tax, it would not allow me to add the 3 rows as it wanted  unique values for box 20 and i couldn't combine the 3 rows into one row as box 18 values differed.

I have never had to file a local return. The employer just withheld the local taxes directly from my paycheck.

You don't need a corrected W-2.  Enter the boxes just like your employer gave it to you (with the box 20 corrections per the e-mail).  It's all irrelevant, since you don't need to file a county return.
