Hi,
My wife became US resident since November 2020. We forgot to claim EIP1 & 2 in our 2020 taxes for her. Can we claim EIP1 & 2 in 2021 tax year? If we can, can we claim it via recovery tax credit or via any other means? We do not want to file amendment, if we do not have any other option, then we want to choose an amendment. Is there a way to claim EIP 1 & 2 now for her without amendment to 2020 taxes? If there is a way, how do we claim EIP1 & 2 this tax year?
Thank You!

Amend the 2020 return for the missed 1 & 2 stimulus payments. Only the third stimulus payment is reconciled on the 2021 return.
amendment for EIP aka Rebate Credit is pretty easy.
You must have a SSN.
Enter the amount you did not get on Line 15 Other. In the space, write "Rebate Credit".
Expect to wait seven months or more for any results.
Is there a separate form that we can file just to claim EIP 1 & 2?
@fanfare, we do have SSN. However, is there a separate form just to claim EIP 1 & 2 only?
No. You have to do an amended 2020 return to claim the first 2 EIP payments. Did you file a Joint return with her ssn? Are you sure you didn't get the Recovery Rebate Credit on 1040 line 30 for her?
Yes, I did file joint with her SSN. I am sure I did not get recovery rebate credit for her because not only did I checked that on IRS website but also checked tax return transcript and I only see my part of rebate.
She came to US on November 2020, and got her SSN at the end of November 2020. Probably, this may be the reason IRS did not send the rebate to her?
Line 30 is only for the amounts you DID NOT get. Did you get your part EIP1 & 2 separately before you filed? On a joint return the amount she gets is the same amount as you $1,800 (1200+600). So if line 30 is 1,800 it could be either for you or her.
I got my part of eip1 &2 directly deposited. I did not do anything. However, sorry I checked tax transcript on irs my account not line 30 on return. On the tax transcript for 2020, I only see 1800 that is for me do not see 3600 for eip1 and 2 for joint return.
1040-X is the separate form.
In the Explanation, explain why you think you are due additional Rebate Credit.
That additional amount should appear in Col. B after the arithmetic is done.
Note: IRS may have adjusted your original amount down.
If you believe that is incorrect, enter the adjusted down amount in Col. A and explain
again why you believe that is in error also.
Ok good. You already got your $1,800. So the $1,800 on line 30 is added for her. It is included in your refund or reduced the tax due. You don't need to amend. You got the total $3,600. You got it all. Your $1,800 is not on line 30, only her $1,800. You already got yours. Line 30 is only for the missing $1,800. Otherwise you would be trying to get yours again.
Oh I reread your posts. So did you have 1,800 on your actual tax return line 30? If not you do need to amend. And I don't think you would see the 3,600 on the IRS account. They would show 1,800 separately on each person's account. Did you check both accounts at the IRS?
We, me and my wife just received 1800 for stimulus 1 and 2 in total. We do not have any amount in line 30. Just the total of 1800 on tax return rebate on tax transcript for 2020. We are 100% on we should receive 1800 for my wife that is not a question at all and we do not have confusion on this.
Question is, is there a way we can get remaining 1800 for my wife without filing separate form 1040 X (an amendment)??
i think which you have answered as amendment is the only way forward, is that correct?
Your ONLY option is to file an amended 2020 return by mail.
why are you so averse to form 1040-X ?
get PDF-fillable 1040-X and its instructions from the IRS website. Enter "2020" in the box above your name.
all amounts above line 18 are not changing so column B is zero
after Line 18 you have to do the arithmetic, get a calculator.
Do not include your old 1040 nor your revised 1040 because the Form 1040-X reflects any changes there and becomes your new tax return.
No other forms or schedules will change, so all you have to do is date, sign and mail form 1040-X,
Mail to the address shown in the Instructions.
