If you did not receive your first and/or second stimulus payment or if the amount received is not correct, you can claim it on your 2020 tax return as the Recovery Rebate Credit.
In TurboTax Online, to claim the Recovery Rebate credit please do the following:
🛑 If you plan to file a tax return this year, you must not try to file a separate return just to claim the stimulus credit. That will cause all kinds of headaches and could delay processing of your regular return for up to 6 months.
If you have no taxable income and only need to file to claim the credit, you will need to create $1 of fake bank interest income so that the system will allow you to file. You don't need to pay Turbotax to file this return. Use the IRS Free File by Turbotax version when it opens.
After step 2, I get a screen that says, "Let's double-check the amount you received". I do not get a "Continue" button. I'm in Turbo Tax Self Employed.
Scroll down to see the Continue button.
I followed the steps but never got the Let's make sure you got the right stimulus amount page. It just went straight to State taxes. Am I doing something wrong?
Thank you. After I get this page, I get a page that says that they are confident that I received what I should have - $3600. $2400 for the first payment and $1200 for the second payment. I had $64K combined income with my wife and we had a child in November 2020. Therefore, I should get extra stimulus for the child in 2020.
Yes. When you file your return, you will show your newborn as a dependent. This will automatically increase your stimulus amount for your child and add the difference to your refund or reduce your balance due, if applicable.
Children born in 2020 were not included in the first stimulus because those checks were based on 2018 or 2019. But on your 2020 tax return you can claim your child born in 2020 for the stimulus on the Recovery Rebate Credit worksheet, as well as the other child credits.
By using the Tax Tools you can take a quick review of your 1040:
Thank you so much. That worked perfectly.
I didn't receive the full stimulus for my child, I got it the first round but not the 2nd or 3rd. When I enter in how much I got, turbo tax said I got the full amount. When my income was nowhere near the limit and my child is 3.
@vlayton1 You should have received $1,200 for each taxpayer and $500 for each dependent under 17 years old for your fist stimulus, and $600 for each taxpayer and $600 for each dependent for the second one.
If it is just you and one child, you should have received $1,700 for the 1st stimulus, so if you enter that in TurboTax, you should have a rebate recovery credit of $1,200, the amount equal to your 2nd. stimulus.
You need to look on line 30 of your form 1040 for the amount of your second stimulus, it will be called the recovery rebate credit.
I filed my taxes through Turbo tax for 2020.
