If you are bring claimed as a dependent by your parents, you are still considered to be a resident of the state your parents live in, since living away at school is a "temporary absence". If you have a job at school, you might have to prepare a non-resident return for the "school" state and a resident return for the state your family lives in. But that depends on what states....there are some states with no state income tax and some states with reciprocal agreements. What states are involved?
Are you a dependent on your parent's tax return? If your parents are claiming you on their tax return, you are a resident of your home state.
If you're a college student that attends an out-of-state university, you will generally need to file a resident tax return for your home state, not the state that your college is in. The exception is if you have established residency in the college state.
