Divorce

I divorced at the end of 2021. No children. When I file taxes as single do, I just have to claim what has my name on the accounts where the income came from? For example, my x spouses name is on the retirement account his social security and the IRA account. The only income that my name is on would be my social security check and the interest on the bank accounts. Last year we filed married jointly. So, when I file single this year do, I just claim my social security and interest as my income for the year or do I have to also add the other accounts as well even though my name isn't on them?  The divorce was finalized in Nov. and at that time the IRA and retirement was split between us.

You are correct that you will only claim the income that has your name on it, so if you only have Social Security and Interest income that is yours, that is all you will claim on your return.

However, if you received a withdrawal from the IRA, you would need to include that on your return as well.  You should get a 1099-R for that disbursement.

The retirement account and IRA belong to your ex if his name and SS number is on those accounts.

You only report on your 2021 tax return when filing Single the social security benefits under your name and SS number and any other accounts where you receive a tax form that have your name and SS number on that account.
