Dependent or independent?

So I have a question on what status to claim for my GF on her taxes and hopefully, someone can help me.  My Girlfriend is 22 and turned 23 in May and was a full-time student during the months of Jan-May 2020. She worked on weekends for money for miscellaneous objects. After she graduated she obtained 3 more jobs to buy a new car. She lives with her mother but didn't pay for utilities, rent, or groceries during 2020. She paid her own bills like her car, health insurance, phone bill, and credit card bills. She ended up making over 36k for the year. Not sure what other information is needed but can someone please help.

Dependent or independent?

It depends.  There are 5 test for an individual to qualify as dependent:

  1. Relationship - must be a child,, foster child, brother, sister, and other descendants.
  2. Residence - must live under the same address for over 6 months.
  3. Age -t age 19 or under 24 and a full -time student for at least 5 months.
  4. Support - provided over one-half of the total support.
  5. Can't file a joint return.

She may be claimed as a dependent, but there are tax consequences because of  her gross income.

Dependent or independent?

forget it.

she's not your child and she made too much to be your qualifying relative.
