Can you still efile fed and ca returns on turbotax now?

Sorry you will have to print and mail 2022 or prior.   Efiling is closed on Turbo Tax even for California.

You will have to mail a prior year return.  Be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them.  You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places.  Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

NO!  Both must be filed on paper.

I got the following message while trying to e-file the tax. Will it help by calling the suggested TurboTax number?

E-File or Audit Defense is closed for the season

Hi there, and thanks for visiting. E-File or Audit Defense in TurboTax is closed as of October 31, 2023, so we can get ready for the upcoming tax season.

See you then!

Can you clarify why W2 is needed for paper filing, and why 1099s that have withholding? What if the 1099 doesn't have withholding?

Also, can I just use TurboTax "print and mail return" feature to print the forms needed? Note that TT doesn't print either W2 or 1099.

Thanks!

The IRS requires thaW-2 and 1099 be mailed with the paper return.  When you print to file a cover sheet is produced.  It has a list of what forms to include and the addresses for mailing.  Make sure you sign the paper return and that you use a certified mailing service so you are notified when it is received.

1099s without federal withholding are not rquired to be attached to the 1040. 1099s without state withholding are generally not required to be attached to state return. read the filing instructions

Thanks, both. Do you know why TurboTax's CA instructions explicitly call out that W2 shouldn't be included?

Also, it says a copy of federal return. But a complete copy of federal return includes W2, right?

It's been a long while I haven't done paper filing. So really appreciate your help!

Attach the following to your California tax return:
a copy of your federal return
any Form(s) W-2G. Also attach any 592-B, 593, and 1099s
that have California withholding to the front of your
return. Do not attach any Forms(s) W-2.

@jimf999 No, of course TurboTax does not print out your W-2's or 1099's.  TT does not have them.   TT only has the information you entered, but does not have copies or images of those documents.  It is up to you to save your own W-2's and 1099's for your records so that you will have them when you need them.

You only need to attach copies of 1099's that show tax withheld, some show that, some do not.   W-2's show tax withheld.  The IRS matches your W-2's and 1099's to the information that was sent to them by the issuers of those documents.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
