Can you file an automatic extension for federal taxes using TurboTax?

It depends on what program you are using. See your options here: How do I file an IRS tax extension? - TurboTax Support - Intuit

This will extend the time you have to file your taxes until October 15th, 2025.

Also, you may have to do your state taxes: Do I need to file an extension for my personal state taxes?

Remember, an extension gives you more time to prepare your taxes, but it doesn't extend the time to pay your taxes.  If you have an indication that you will owe taxes, you should make the payment by the original due date of the tax return to avoid additional interest and penalties.

It is too late to file a federal extension.  Had to be filed by April 15.   You are just late.  You can efile until Oct 15.  If you are getting a refund there is no penalty for filing late.  You have 3 years to file for a refund.  If you have a tax due the payment was still due by April 15.  Then extension is only to file the return.

unless you are in a disaster area with an extended original due date, you cannot file a valid extension. For non- disaster area filers, the due date was 4/15/2025. an extension is not needed if you are due a refund because the penalty is based on the amount owed. If you owe, you are subject to late filing and late payment penalties and interest that will continue to accrue until the IRS gets your return and payment.
