Thanks, I shall look in to it. However just a quick question. Will IRS handle CA state tax issues?
Also I want to contest or protest this as I feel that CA FTB made some mistake or if not then TT software had a bug in the year 2016 which brought in this discrepancy.
Also I was more interested in understanding why this discrepancy happened. I feel there was some bug in the TurboTax software for the year 2016 and hence CA is seeing some issues with the tax. Sad that Turbo Tax is disowning all the issues before 2017. Also sad to see that there is no platform to say that whether this is the software issue, or a human error or a audit error from CA FTB.
The IRS does not handle state issues. However, because of the Treasury Offset Program your Federal Refund can be taken to pay State taxes. This does not normally occur in the current year, but rather would happen if State taxes were owed from a previous year.

I have the same issue. This is frustrating and I feel TurboTax should take responsibility or at least address it.
I got the same issue but for 2017. I wonder if Turbo Tax can help to resolve these different calculations by FTB and TT?
i got FTB 5830G from state of california for 2017. I consulted CPA and was told to turbotax will take care of it because either 1. It's turbo tax software issue or 2. State of California is wrong.
The question is how do you go about engaging turbotax to have them take a look at this?
I have the same issue for my 2018 taxes. Good to know I'm not the only one. Disappointed that Turbo Tax has not commented on this issue.
@MichaelBerke if it is a Turbo Tax software issue, note that they will take responsibility for penalties and interest, but not the tax itself. That is how their guanrentee is written.
if the error was caused by the user entering incorrect information, Turbo Tax will not cover that at all.
Upon completion of the audit, we mail a Notice of Proposed Assessment (NPA) to you if you owe additional:
This notice is not a bill. Your balance due will become a bill if you take no action by the protest by date. If you agree with the proposed amount, pay your NPA.
If you disagree with the audit findings, you can file a protest by the protest by date shown on the front of the NPA. You have 60 days to protest.

Yes, I'm having the same issue with my 2018 return. I just got a 5830G from FTB, demanding $3939.78, $477.78 of which is interest. Are you all saying that this is because of some TurboTax glitch?
