Can I share turbo tax 2023 product key with a family member if we have different turbo tax log in accounts?

After all my research on this topic, I know that if you use the desktop version of TT, that your data and tax return will be stored locally on your PC and not online / cloud. To get your data and tax return in the online version, you must use the online version of TT.
This is the way I prefer it as well. Don’t put my data on the cloud unless I request it or initiate it.

Can I share turbo tax 2023 product key with a family member if we have different turbo tax log in accounts?

For a CD purchase -just solved and verified last night. Long time family sharer, it is now slightly more complicated with 2023.  You just can't pass the CD as you did in the past, everyone has to setup an Intuit account now.  The CD license code gets attached to the Intuit account of the first person that installs/registers the CD.  When the next people try to install, it asks them to set up an Intuit account, but then does not allow the CD to set up/install, because that license code from the CD label is already associated  with another account(i.e. the first person).  So for the 2nd/3rd, etc person to install, they must have the login info (user name & password) from the first person that registered it.  THIS IS ONLY NEEDED FOR THE CD INSTALLATION, NOT THE ACTUAL TAX RETURN.  Once you install there is a product installation screen which will have the email from the first person and that i can't be changed, this info is only for the product registration/marketing emails, and you can skip over it.  So don't fill out anything hit continue.    This now takes you into starting your tax return.  You can either start with a brand new tax return and enter your name/info or if you have a previous tax turn on your computer, it will ask you to transfer and it will start your 2023 tax return with YOUR name/info and you can get started with your 2023 tax return.

I can't believe there was 4 pages worth of vague answers  from "experts" and  the Turbo Tax people can't explain the process.   Again, this was for a CD install, I am not sure about purchasing and sharing a download version.

I did setup an intuit account when I first tried to install, but I never ended up using it, even after I used the first person login info for the install.  There was a screen at the beginning of the install process that showed 1/5 installs (and then I would be 2/5).  And just to confirm, I can't see anything of the first users tax return and they can't see anything of mine.  All of this intuit account stuff has to do with the installation of the CD, not the tax return or filing.  I believe my situation is very similar to most people.  My father bought the CD, he installs in on his computer at his house, and I install in it on mine at my house. I do believe this new process is in place to keep the sharing limited to 5 immediate family/close friends.   I believe in the past CDs were past around entire dorms/apartment buildings and shared hundreds of times.  Good Luck Everyone.

Edit: The license holder owns the computer in my house .

Final update: both my father and I have electronically filed our taxes with no issues, and can not see each others returns.

The TurboTax user license allows one user to install copies of TurboTax on up to five computers that the user owns. You can also prepare multiple returns, including returns for other people. But the license does not allow, and has never allowed, one copy to be shared among different people.  This year, that license is being enforced by requiring users to log into their TurboTax online account when they install the program for the first time. This locks one particular copy of the program and one license code to one user account. The only way you could install the program on a computer that you do not own, would be to give the other person your online username and password. And even though that workaround might allow the installation, it’s still a violation of the license.

If it can only be used by one person, why 5 e-files are included?

You can do returns for your family and kids, etc.

Can I share turbo tax 2023 product key with a family member if we have different turbo tax log in accounts?

Thx a lot Sir. This the most clear answer I have seen so far.  My main concern was whether each user can see the tax return of each other.

That is the answer I wish to know. Thx for telling me this after you have tried out.

"I can't see anything of the first users tax return and they can't see anything of mine. "

Can I share turbo tax 2023 product key with a family member if we have different turbo tax log in accounts?

Like  many people commenting here, I shared a License code with my partner.  He downloaded the software and started his taxes ahead of me. When I started, we discovered I needed to log into HIS Intuit account before I could proceed. So he shared a verification code with me so I could log in.  Everything worked fine after that - including our federal e-filing. (We don't e-file our state taxes via TT.) My concern and question is will my personal tax info/documents be viewable/accessible via my partner's Intuit account? Even though he is a trusted friend, I don't like the idea of my private financial data being accessible from someone else's account. Here is a screenshot from a short while ago when I logged into my intuit account. Under Documents section, it states "Coming Soon. We're preparing this space for your personal tax documents." When my partner logged into his, he sees same. Is this where my personal documents will end up appearing on my partner's account?

I appreciate any insight you can offer as to whether or not my personal info will now be forever linked to my partner's Intuit account. Thank you!

My partner and I shared one License code. I had to log into his Intuit account in order to share it and be able to download the software on my own PC. Since then, we have both now successfully e-filed our federal returns. But, concerning my own personal e-file, I have no idea whose account I was logged into when I e-filed. I only had to log in once and that's when I was forced to log into my partner's Intuit account. Once I started using the software to work on my return, there was no indication of whose Intuit account I was using. Everyone thing appeared the same as it had been in years past. At this point, I have no idea where, or if, my personal tax info is now permanently accessible via my Partner's Intuit account. It's kind of creepy and I don't know if I want to continue to use TT going forward. Or, if I do, I guess I will be purchasing my own software and not splitting the cost and the license with anyone!

No.  Your return is only saved, stored and accessed on your computer.  Same as before.  Only the computer it was done on.  That new coming document section would be for other things you want to store there like copies of your W2, 1099, bank statements.  I think anything.

But when you actually efiled at the end did you have to log into your own account?  Or didn't it ask you?  Maybe not if you didn't have to pay for a state efile.  I'm asking because logging in to install is a new thing this year.

When I e-filed at the end (which I got confirmation it was successfully filed and accepted), it DID NOT ask me to log into any Intuit account. Everyone acted the same as past years. However, I should add that I did worked on and completed my return over 2-3 days and during that time, I would periodically save my file, but I never actually closed the software. I actually made a point of leaving it open because I didn't want to be forced to log into my partner's Intuit account again. But then I actually has a freak incident the other morning where my laptop would not power up and when I finally solved the issue everything I'd previously had open was now closed. But when I re-opened my 2023 return, it opened right up and I was not forced to log in again! What a relief!

Thank you so much for your reassurance: "Your return is only saved, stored and accessed on your computer.  Same as before." You have really put my mind at ease!

This is really bad for privacy and security. I have been using this product for more than 10 years with my partner, but I do not want to share my information. This new way for "family sharing" is terrible and unconscious of the consequences for the families.

Has this changed? in the previous year, I was able to purchase 1 Turbotax and install it on 3 different computers for 3 different households. I.e my mother who lives separate from me and my sister who also lives separate from me.

Can I share turbo tax 2023 product key with a family member if we have different turbo tax log in accounts?

Yes, you can still share the product but the rules have changed a little.

The Product Key is only used once, when TurboTax is initially installed on a computer.

If another person wants to use it on another computer, they will need to sign in to the owner's account and download it to their computer (or the owner will need to sign in to their account on your computer).

Does that mean the the person who purchased the turbotax would have access to the other individual's returns though?
