Same here - I’ve been pursuing a firm to represent in a class action. I’ve put little energy into dealing with TT. They are useless shots and won’t help at all even though they know it was clearly their error. If anyone has had any luck with TT please let us know. I will go back and pursue them again a just haven’t had the time lately. It’s very consuming, but I haven’t given up and I DO have all of my complete returns clearly showing where THEIR error is! So pissed off!
And let me add - the IRS is aware. We are the tip of the iceberg. They know TT screwed up a ton of returns with this error - they told me so. Very disheartening to hear they have come after one of the posters here for yet another year - I expect it’s coming for all of us. The negligence of TT to make such a gross error and leave god knows how many people, to deal with the repercussions of their mistake, is unconscionable and grossly negligent. If anyone knows a class action lawyer please pursue this and let me know how I can help
you raise an interesting question. the IRS supposedly only retains tax returns for 6 years. some have claimed that the error dates back to 2009. so how does the IRS know the AMT credit carryforward is in error?
I have this issue. I found where TT entered an AMT amount of a line in my return. This was a software entered amount not manual.
Yes, we have all had the same problem with TT and they will not admit to the issue and blame user error. Most of us have had huge tax bills as a result, years later, and TT will not help.
Ugh joining the conversation as I received the same audit notice and traced the error back to the errant TurboTax 2009 form 8801 carry forward. Hopeful we collectively find restitution for the penalty and interest expenses we now immediately owe.
There was an auto fill line in the return (Nothing I entered.), that created an AMT credit. It was carried forward for years. I believe the IRS found this out and now has software to go looking for this. We appealed to the IRS for relief on the penalty, it has been under review for 8 months. You may want to check your 2019 and 2020 return for the same error.
Exactly what happen to me! So much for TT accuracy guarantee!
Today I received an IRS audit letter for claiming a large AMT credit on my 2019 return. I began using TT in 2015 because the taxes became too complicated to do myself. I thought I could rely on TT to be accurate but clearly that was a false hope. It is very discouraging to learn that TT will not stand behind its guarantee.
I RECEIVED A LETTER FROM THE IRS/STATE
TurboTax does not receive any information from the IRS or your state after your return was filed, so no one at TurboTax knows about a letter you received from the IRS or the state.
(what the letters from the IRS mean)

AUDIT SUPPORT
TurboTax has a special phone number for help with IRS/state tax letters, which will be easier than going through regular Customer Support. At the page below, click on the blue button that says "Get Help from TurboTax Support". Then it will ask you what tax year is your letter. Then it will ask you what the letter concerns. Then it will show you the phone number during posted business hours.

I have created a return #893098. IRS has audited me for a carryover AMT tax credit that say I am not qualified for. This credit has been in my tax return since 2011 of which all years I have used Turbo Tax to file. Please investigate this so I can respond to this audit.
Thanks
Yes I have the exact same problem and now IRS auditing my 2019 return over it.
Yes same problem here, just got audit notice today. Did you get any type of answer from TT?
They are saying it is user entered because user entries show up in blue when you look at the forms. HOWEVER that does not mean that the user entered the data in that specific line on that specific form.
It only means that the user entered it at some point doing the return. If the TT software uses that entry again it will still show up in blue.
This is just TT playing the semantics game.
All,
I have heard it all. TurboTax owns this community and they are well aware of the error. How many of us are there? Let’s say 10,000 returns. If the error is $18,000 for each, then it’s a $180 MILLION dollar mistake. No public company would admit to that or give out any remedy. They will only react to litigation and they are hoping we don’t organize and sue. It’s really that simple
