This simply doesn't work. The field has $0. in it and there is a button to update, but it won't let you update the amount. This is a bug.
If the field has a $0 entered then there is a support detail that needs to be removed.
Put your cursor in the box that shows $0.
Click on Edit at the top of the desktop screen
Click on Add Supporting Details
With the Supporting Details window open click on Remove at the top of the window
I discovered this solution after HOURS of searching. I'm running Mac, so there was no Edit screen. I had to go to the actual form and work on it from there. THIS IS A BUG THAT NEEDED TO HAVE BEEN FIXED LONG AGO. Intuit needs their wings clipped for putting out garbage with NO ONE TO TALK TO to get solutions to their problems.
Community? Seriously, how does relying on the community constitute support?
I did find the work around but I paid for a program. One should not have to have to figure out the bugs in the program in order to use it. I paid over $100 for this fraud of a program this year. There are more bugs too:
The personal Rep Bug that no one has worked around except by making an incorrect, thus illegal, entry.
There is a personal Info bug also.
I can't e-file and am supposed to be able to.
Turbo Tax Home and Business 2023 is a ripoff.
I'm having the exact same issue in Jan 2025, still searching for a fix, have even tried to use the forms, but not finding which line to show my property taxes on.

If there is $0 pre-filled in the box for property taxes, then try this -
Put your cursor in the box
Click on Edit at the top of the desktop program screen
Click on Add Supporting Details
On the Supporting Details window click on Remove to the top of the window.
You should be able to enter the property taxes.
Found a backward way to enter State and Local Property Taxes. Go to forms, go to Schedule A, scroll to Line 2a. (I always add details). When I went back to the Step-by-Step instructions, my entered property tax amount was in there....finally!
Here we are now in Jan 2025 and STILL, this bug exists.
I fought this last year, and again this year, but the issue is subtle and here's the fix I found (I'm on Windows, but Mac might be the same):
- On the menu bar, select View / Form
Path 1:
- In the left panel, click "Schedule A"
- Now in the right pane, find 5b for State and local real estate taxes
- Click in the box where you'd enter numbers, and then Edit / Add Supporting Details
- Delete all of the data in rows that might be there -- that's what prevents the step-by-step from working
Path 2 (if path 1 doesn't work):
- In the left pane, click Tax & Int Wks under Schedule A
- Now in the right pane, find 2a for Real estate taxes...not entered on Form 1098
- Click in the box where you'd enter numbers, and then Edit / Add Supporting Details
- Delete all of the data in rows that might be there -- that's what prevents the step-by-step from working
You should be able to enter data in the step-by-step process now -- it worked for me. I had old notes from a prior year in those supporting detail tables.
Thanks. I just ended up entering them in the form itself, and it populated the step by step with those numbers.
