I have the same problem. I entered the first 5 digits and the return was rejected by IRS. This is a bug!
To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN
Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button
Two different PINS, the IRS IP PIN is 6 digit and the one for TurboTax is your own 5 digit PIN. Its more confusing than a bug. You get the 6 digit PIN from your IRS website and enter as many people have said above.
The IP PIN is obtained from the IRS.gov account. The problem with TurboTax is it doesn't ask you anywhere for the IP PIN but if you have one your filing will be rejected. To enter the IP PIN on TT Premier you need to go to Federal Taxes> Other Tax Situations> Identity Protection PIN then click Sart or update. You might also have to enter one for your spouse so be careful. Its nowhere in the Step by Step questions.
On further review you can enter the IP PIN on Part VII of the Federal Information Sheet
This is a flaw and a bug in the desktop software that need to be fixed. My e-file was rejected, and I followed the directions in my desktop program to fix the problem, but the program directed me to do nothing differently. This is the bug. Then I had to independently research the problem to discover that the IP PIN is not only NOT the e-filing pin but can only be entered in federal taxes -- other tax tax situations. This makes NO sense. It should be incorporated into the e-filing process, not hidden away under federal taxes. This is the flaw.
Thanks. I followed your suggestion and resubmitted the Federal return. It has been accepted.
Ok. Just figured this out myself. You need both pins. The 5 digit and the 6 digit.
The IP Pin is entered here: Federal Taxes> Other Tax Situations> Identity Protection PIN
The 5 digit pin is entered while answering the questions to efile. Normal normal.
The kicker is that the IP Pin is valid only for the current CALENDAR YEAR. It expires 12/31 every year.
So if you applied for your IP pin in 2024 - like me - it is NO LONGER VALID. Just go into your IRS account, navigate to where you can get an IP PIN, and when you scroll down, you'll see the IRS has issued you a new pin.
I re-efiled with this 2025 pin and it was accepted.
.😑
Where can you enter that in TurboTax? I can't find anywhere where it will let me enter more than five digits.

I did finally figure that out. Ridiculously complicated!! But when I tried to efile TurboTax still asked for a 5-digit PIN. We'll see if it get rejected for the umpteenth time.
It was rejected again. How do you get TurboTax to actually use the IP PIN?
Didn't work for me.
When did you create the IP Pin? …

I created it some time in the past. I did have the current PIN. On the third try with the correct PIN supposedly entered in TurboTax, the return was finally accepted.
does not answer question. tubo tax only allows 5 digits!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
