Bug: My IP PIN is 6 digits. Online desktop only allows 5

My new IP PIN is 6 characters long.  My TurboTax Desktop 2024 version only allows 5 characters max.

Make sure you are entering the IP PIN and not the self-selected PIN (which is five digits).  See Is my Self-Select PIN the same as my IP PIN?

Thanks.  I used the self selected PIN that I used last year and the tax return was rejected.

Do I need a new self-selected PIN each year?  If so can you suggest how I obtain one?

Hold it wait.  I am entering the IP PIN that was sent to me by the IRS last October.

It is a 6 digit number.  When I try an type it in Turbo tax it won't allow the 6th digit.

To enter, edit or delete a 6 digit IP PIN

Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
Click on Other Tax Situations
Scroll down to Other Return Info
On Identity Protection PIN, click the start button

Thanks I think I might have it.  I followed the instructions you sent and was able to enter all 6 digits.

What through me is when I prepare to sent the return and check the IP PIN number there are only 5 digits showing.  The 6th appear lopped off.  I just went ahead and submitted the return, so we will see.

However, in the Sign Your Return as you are about to transmit, the panel is not showing that 6th digit.  This appears to be a Bug.  If you try and enter the PIN there, it allows you to edit, but when you type the 6th digit you get a "too long" error.

In the File section of the program on Step 3 you can enter a self-selected 5 digit PIN for e-filing along with the 2023 AGI so that the 2024 tax return can be e-filed.

I went ahead filed my tax again using the IP PIN that I received from the IRS last October thinking it would be good for a year.  Again rejected.  Before pursuing this further I signed into my account with the IRS and found yet a difference IP PIN.  So, I tried again with this PIN number and it worked.

I guess the rule is that the IRS can change your information at anytime.

My wife just had this exact problem.  Logged into her irs.gov account and sure enough they changed the IP PIN...  WTH!

The IRS issues a new IPPIN for each tax year.  You will need to retrieve the new IPPIN each year prior to filing your tax return.

I have gone to the PIN input page and input my six-digit PIN numerous times, but each time I go to "review" it kicks it out and wants to "FIX" the error. So will I have to file by mail since Intuit apparently cannot fix this? Yes, I have quit ad restarted several times with no change.

I ended up filing my taxes online through Turbo Tax.  In the chain is an instruction to use the Other Tax Situations tab.  I entered my 6 digit PIN there.  Keep in mind that I had to check my Account with my online IRS account to get the current and correct PIN.

As I got ready to file, and in checking my information, I saw another PIN number which only allows 5 digits.  It didn't have the same PIN that I had entered in my Other Tax Situations.  I just gave it a 5 digit number.  In truth, I have no idea what this latter PIN number is or is supposed to be.  But I decided to wing it and sent it again.  This time it worked.  The PIN number in the Other Tax Situations is the PIN that the IRS wants to see.

Hope this works.  Multiple PIN number is a little confusing, but in the end I was able to file online.

My IRS filing was rejected twice with a message about PIN not being there for Person 1.  I then realized as others have said you have to enter both the IP PIN and your own eFile PIN which are completely different.  The IP PIN is obtained from the IRS.gov account.  The problem with TurboTax is it doesn't ask you anywhere for the IP PIN but if you have one your filing will be rejected.  To enter the IP PIN on TT Premier you need to go to Federal Taxes> Other Tax Situations> Identity Protection PIN then click Sart or update.  You might also have to enter one for your spouse so be careful.  Its nowhere in the Step by Step questions.

Thanks for the clarification DoninGA.  The Turbotax software doesn't "guide" you to the IRS IP PIN entry location, and the location where the IRS PIN info is entered is NOT intuitive, per your directions.  I seem to go through this every year.  The 5-digit PIN that the software asks for is just confusing misdirection.

I have the same problem.  I entered the first 5 digits and the return was rejected by IRS.  This is a bug!
