Amending a return, stuck at "Correct your payment date"

I owe some more money. Happy to pay it, but the system won't accept dates in 2022 or 2023, so I'm stuck in an endless loop of trying to 'fix' my return. I talked to TT Live, but they couldn't figure it out and suggested I print and file by mail. I really don't want to go through that, and I can't figure out why TT wouldn't be able to handle this very common situation

Sorry for an amended return you have to mail a check with the 1040X.  You can't debit your bank account.  Or pay directly on the IRS.

You can pay the IRS directly at

Try shutting down your computer, when you turn it back on the problem may be fixed.

Please try the following steps which may help clear the loop you are experiencing:

  • Log completely out of Turbo Tax.
  • Then, clear your cache and cookies within your browser and completely close out of it.  I have included the Help Articles below if you need assistance with clearing cache or cookies.
  • Re-open the browser and log back into Turbo Tax and see if this fixes the situation.
    • You can also try a different browser as well, or "incognito mode".

If none of the above steps resolve the issue, please reach back out here in the thread and someone will follow up with the next steps.

Thank you for the detailed reply! I tried all the steps you outlined, but am unfortunately still getting the same circular error. It's between the following screens in the 2021 refile section:

Your completecheck to-do list

Correct Your Payment Date
Direct Debit Date

I've tried dates in 2021, 2022 and 2023, without success. As far as I'm concerned they could take the money out any time.

I'm having the same issue, have you resolve it?

Unfortunately not. I'm a little frustrated that everyone at TT has suggested that it's possible, but none could give me accurate instructions about how. Eventually I found a number of other people reporting this bug stretching back more than a year, none resolved. Here's a link to the search that turned them up:

I just gave up and mailed my check to the IRS. The one helpful thing I can share: Submitting the paperwork electronically is possible, but paying is not. So if you're careful with your button selection (I don't remember details, sorry) you're only having to print and mail one page, plus the check. Still annoying, especially since I strongly recommend you send certified mail (which requires a trip to the post office) because I hear the IRS is backlogged and it will be good to prove to them that the check is in their inbox if they ever reach out to you.
