After hours entering tax data, i noticed that i failed to import prev year's file. Can i do this WITHOUT having to start new return? If not, it would be nice feature. THX

No.  Unfortunately, I'm sorry to report that you have to start a new blank return in order to transfer-in the tax data file from the prior year.

Where is your 2023 tax data file currently; i.e., how did you prepare your 2023 return--in Online TurboTax or in desktop software?    Underneath your question the tag says you are using Online TurboTax.  If so, and if you also used 2023 Online TurboTax last year, it should have transferred into your 2024 Online return automatically when you first started this year if you are using the same online account as last year.

Or did you use 2023 desktop software last year and have the *.tax2023 data file stored on your computer?   If so, we can tell you how to transfer it into either a desktop or online return--depending on what you are using--but in either case it will require you to start over.   We would first need to know exactly what platform you used last year (online/desktop) and what you are using this year.

ADDENDUM:

I now see you also have another thread in this forum, which implies you are using 2024 desktop software since you asked how to download it.

Do you have the *.tax2023 data file from last year on your computer?   If so, the 2024 desktop program should have automatically searched for it when you chose to start your return and then give you the option to transfer or not.

Or is it this?

Did you install the 2024 desktop software then used Online TurboTax (browser version) by mistake?   It has happened to some people before.

Looks like you got 2024 installed ok?  From your other post.   Yes in the Desktop program it doesn't automatically transfer from 2023.   Did you use the Online version for 2023?  Or the Desktop program?

In my Windows Desktop program, Starting in 2023 there is a new way to Transfer directly from last year's Online return.

Go up to File - New Tax Return
If you get a box listing current returns, under the box click on Start a New Return
That will bring up your 2023 returns if you have any on your computer
Or down below there will be a blue button to Import From TurboTax Online

It would be impractical at best, and probably impossible, for TurboTax to implement a feature to transfer data from the previous year after the new tax return has been started. There would be numerous redundancies and conflicts between the data transferred from the previous year and the data already entered manually for the new year. It would be impossible for the software to resolve those conflicts.

We have a lot of mesquite not far from here.

Thank you so much for taking the time and energy to look into my situation.

I have written back via email but discovered today that Intuit does not accept email replies.

My original posts were done via the "contact us" button with a 100 character limit, or i would have posted more information.

- I had not downloaded tax2024 yet. VolvoGirl posted a good sounding answer and i moved on.

- Tax2023 (desktop) did not "see" nor find my prior returns and did not offer to import them.

- Yes, i came very close to accidentally using TT online.

In the end, i started over completely, typed everything in all over again AFTER importing tax2022. It was important because of the capital loss carryforward.

Thank you again so much for all your help

and sorry it took so long to figure out the whole forum/community thing.

TurboTax is complicated by necessity. I understand the architecture being unable to import additional information after starting a return. (Although as a former programmer, additional data structures could allow information to come in/out of play. But it's virtually impossible to write new things into code once the architecture is set.)

Thanks for a well reasoned answer!
