I bought TT Basic desktop software. Thought it said I could file up to 5 federal returns. I just filed my own return but would now like to work on my daughter's return. Did I misunderstand that? Can I not file a separate, additional fed return with the Basic software?

You can complete and file as many tax returns as needed with the Basic edition. There are 5 free federal e-files included with the purchase of the software. Any return over the 5 have to be printed and mailed.
To start another tax return, click on the File menu at the top left of the desktop program screen. Click on New Tax Return.
You are right. I bought the physical disk for Home & Business and on the back 5 Federal returns is checked off under all versions, Basic included. If she lives in another state, I think it may not include a 2nd state, but should include 5 federal and 5 for the same one state.
Thanks for the response. I was able to locate the tab to start a new return for my daughter. Will reach back out if I have any trouble.
......the free state software is available only for Deluxe or higher versions. (Though, some 3rd party sellers also have a Deluxe version without one free state software set....for those who live in non-income-tax states)
IF you have a state to file, and are using Basic....you will have to buy each state needed....there there's an additional $25 state e-file fee right now too (but state can be printed and mailed in without e-filing it...cost of stamp and paper, and no extra $25).
