Accidentally made a claim on an IRA that I do not have. How would I fix this?

I made a claim on a nonexistent IRA, which I confused for a 401(k). I already have a 401(k) through my employer and don’t plan on opening an IRA. I only realized my mistake after my return was accepted. Would I have to amend the return and start over again, or would it even make much of a difference? Thank you for any advice.

Do you entered a IRA contribution?   Was it on your 1040 schedule 1 line 19 or added a 8606 form?

If yes, then you need to amend and remove it.

Do not rush to amend - no hurry. You have 3 years to amend and amended returns are taking 4-6 months or longer to be processed so waiting a few weeks will make little difference and amending too soon might just compound the problem. (If you amend today you probably will not see the results until August or September).

To amend your 2020 tax return:

-- First, *wait* to see if your return has been accepted or rejected by the IRS or state. DO NOT do anything until you receive the accept or reject e-mail.

-- If rejected, you can correct and re-send your return.

-- If accepted you should *wait* until your return has been processed and you receive your refund or conformation that any tax due has been paid. (If you file an amended return while you first return is being processed it can cause extended delays for both returns if two returns are in the system at the same time). In addition, if the IRS makes any change on your original return, you might end up having to amend the amendment – a sticky process that can take a year or more).

-- Then you can start the amend process.

It is suggested that it be mailed certified with return receipt (or other tracking service) to verify that the IRS receives it. That is the only proof of mailing that the IRS will accept.

-- Amended returns can be mailed or e-filed - allow 8-12 weeks - can take up to 16 weeks (4 months) for processing.

See this TurboTax FAQ for help with amending:

You can check the status of your amended return here but allow 3 weeks after filing for it to show up:

Accidentally made a claim on an IRA that I do not have. How would I fix this?

@macuser_22 I only got a W-2 form from my employer. I didn’t file using any other forms. I didn’t enter an amount of money for the (nonexistent) IRA either, so not sure if I could still be penalized, even though I don’t have an IRA or any extra income.

Then what do you mean you made a claim for an IRA?

Accidentally made a claim on an IRA that I do not have. How would I fix this?

@VolvoGirl When filing, TurboTax asked if I had or planned on opening an IRA that I could get a break on. I checked that I had one, yet I mistook an IRA for a 401(k), which I already have. I don’t intend on opening an IRA, so I’m posting to find out what the right solution would be to solve this.

But you didn't enter an amount for a IRA contribution?  Then nothing to fix.  That was just a question or ad so it would ask you other questions later.  It didn't affect your tax return.
