This is bullshit - I didn't know it was an added on fee. I thought that was the cost of filing being deducted from my refund

The $40 "refund processing fee" is the fee you have if you choose to pay your TurboTax fees from your federal refund instead of paying upfront using a credit or debit card before you e-file.   If you choose "refund processing" your refund goes first from the IRS to a third party bank.  That bank takes out the fees to pay TurboTax, keeps $40 for itself and deposits the rest of the refund in your account.  You can avoid that fee by paying upfront before you e-file.
