Anyone know when the desktop version will be released?

The initial release is typically in November, so expect to see it in the first half of November 2023.
(If you are instead asking about 2022 TurboTax for preparing your 2022 tax return, the initial release was a month ago.)
For 2023? Not until next November. You use the 2022 program to do a 2022 tax return. It is available now.

Or find it in stores and Amazon, etc.
Was looking for the CD version for tax year 2022. Staples did not have earlier this week, but looks like now they are shipping for mid December
it is a rip off
for the second year in a row the software is not complete, you might as well play candy land as this software will not be complete until early January 2024. wait for the cheaper editions in December.
The CD/download software recently became available for 2023; however, it will require a number of updates. The IRS and the states still do not have all of the 2023 forms ready, so the software will update as those forms become available during the next couple of months. The early version of the CD/download is always a "beta" version that will require updates; releasing it is a marketing strategy. None of the other tax software on the market will have all of the forms now, either, since they all have to wait for the IRS and the states to get them ready, then wait for the IRS and states to approve of the tax software that goes with those forms.
As for pricing of the CD/download, you can often (maybe even now) find retailers selling it cheaper than the price from Intuit. Just be careful----purchase from reputable, known retailers.

I always buy my program from Costco in January when they usually have a coupon. And last year if you bought from Costco or Sams there was an automatic $10 rebate good toward the state efile fee or additional state program or other fees you might add.
