2023 Federal Estimated Taxes - Standard Deduction vs Itemize

For 2022, TurboTax recommended I take the standard Federal deduction but itemize on my California return. When I went to prepare my 2023 estimated taxes, TurboTax did not ask whether I expected to once again use the standard Federal deduction. Instead, it asked me enter the (Federal) itemized deductions I expected for 2023. How do I tell TurboTax which federal deduction to use? Should I enter all zeros in the list of 2023 Itemized Deductions?

Thanks,

Will

wdeatrick,

TurboTax will certainly go with the std deduction if your expected itemized deductions will be small. So go ahead and enter zeroes.

I thought TurboTax generated different numbers depending on whether or not I entered zeros in the itemized deductions, but that turned out to be operator error. As you stated, TurboTax is choosing which deduction, standard or itemized, is best for my 2023 estimated taxes just as it did for 2022. Thanks very much.

2023 Federal Estimated Taxes - Standard Deduction vs Itemize

This past year I paid a quarterly estimated payment of $3078 - how much should I pay for this coming year

To prepare estimates for next year you start with your current return, but be careful not to change anything.  If you can't get back into your return, Click on Add a State to let you back into your retun.

You can just type W4 in the search box at the top of your return , click on Find. Then Click on Jump To and it will take you to the estimated tax payments section. Say NO to changing your W-4 and the next screen will start the estimated taxes section.
