1099-MISC Entry Question

Hello hive mind. Hoping you can help me get this straight.

I am a teacher and took a workshop last year that paid me a stipend. I have a 1099-MISC for that stipend. TurboTax keeps asking me self-employment questions  - things about employees I paid and such - that make no sense to me in this situation. This was money related to my main job, and paid to me by the university that held the workshop. Perhaps it's just semantics, but that doesn't seem like self-employment to me. Should I pretend that I owned a company that got money from the university, or is there another way to enter this that I am missing? Thanks for the help!!

1099-MISC Entry Question

You are not considered self-employed. Delete any entries you have made already regarding this income. Then enter the income as other income, not subject to self-employment.

Please follow the steps below to enter your stipend income:

  1. Login to your TurboTax Account
  2. Click "Federal" from the left side of your screen
  3. Scroll  down to "Less Common Income" and click "Show More"
  4. Scroll down to "Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C" and click "Start"
  5. Select "Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099" and click "Start"
  6. On the "Did you receive any other wages?" screen, answer "Yes" and click "Continue"
  7. Continue until you get to the "Any other earned income" screen, answer "Yes" and click "Continue"
  8. On the "Enter Source of Other Earned income" screen, select "Other" and click "Continue"
  9. On the "Any Other Earned Income" screen, enter "Stipend" for the description, enter the amount and click "Done".
