1099-int (rev. 10-2013)

I received one this year for the first time.

It reads, "This amount may represent interest on an over payment for more than one year, or more than one kind of tax.  This interest may have been paid with your tax refund or part or all may have been applied against other taxes paid."

I'm not seeing a good explanation in the comments about what it means. Can someone please ELI5?

A letter from the IRS?  Yes they paid you interest on a refund.  That's all it means.  Interest from the IRS is taxable. Enter it like any other 1099 INT and put the amount in box 1.
