The primary (or only) taxpayer on this tax return was claimed as a dependent on someone else's tax return. Is that correct? If so, do the following to indicate that the taxpayer (you?) can be claimed as a dependent.

  • Click the Personal Info tab.
  • Click You & Your Family.
  • On the Personal Info Summary screen, click the Edit button to the right of your name.
  • On the next screen, Your Info, click Continue.
  • The next screen says "Do Any of These Apply . . .?" Check the box that says someone else can claim you on their tax return.
  • Click Continue, and proceed through the questions until you get back to the Personal Info Summary.

If the primary taxpayer should not have been claimed as a dependent by anyone else, print the tax return, sign it, and file it by mail without making any changes. The IRS will contact both you and the person who claimed you to determine whether or not you were properly claimed as a dependent.
