The rules did not change.   The only change to the CTC is that for 2023 the refundable additional child tax credit amount was $1600; for 2024 that is $1700.

The credit is shown on lines 19 and 28 of your Form 1040.  Look at your tax forms to see if the credit was there.

If you qualified for it last year it would have been added automatically.  Remember that the amount of the additional child tax credit is calculated from the amount of income you earned from working---so you might not get the full amount.

Wow.  That's super helpful.  Thank you.

TT comparison told me 2023 was zero and 2024 is 2K so that's why this came up.

Upon looking at 2023 1040, the 2K credit is there on line 19 and on schedule 8812 but NOT on line 28 of the 1040.   It seems to me that this missing from line 28 is keeping the 2K out of the total Payments calculation on lines 32, 33 and therefore refund.   Difficult to tell if i got the credit or not, but i'm leaning to not and needing to amend.

Tax guy from Intuit who just called me said it's 2k in 2024 but was 1.9k in 2023

Here is how the additional child tax credit that ends up on line 28 is calculated:

Take the amount you earned from working, subtract $2500, and multiply what is left by 15%.  That is your additional child tax credit ---- up to a maximum of $1700 per child for 2024.   For 2023 that maximum was $1600.

Tx.  Looks like i did get it.  2k came off tax liability (line 24) increasing the return.  Guess the glitch was just the software comparing 2023 to 2024 in summary.   Line 28 is additional credit which i had none.

@userhousephiliac Glad you figured it out!

Why didn't I get child tax credit for 2023 taxes but am for 2024

Hello, I am just curious on why I’m not seeing the CTC or my RSC on my refund. My refund amount is saying Federal($1549), State($401). However this CTC is saying I qualify for ($2000) and my RSC is ($159). Is there something that I didn’t file for it not to show up?

Typically, your credits are already included in the refund amount. It's possible that you would have a balance due without your credits. If you'd like, we can look at your return and see exactly what you see to  help come to a resolution. The return will be scrubbed and won't include any of your personal details.

If you're using TurboTax Online:
