Not sure what you mean when you say it "stopped." During the months of July through December 2021 there were advance child tax credit payments made monthly. That was only for those specific six months in 2021. If you got those payments then you received half of the possible amount of the child tax credit for 2021. Then you got the rest as part of your refund when you prepared and filed your 2021 tax return. There are no more advance child tax credit payments now. For tax year 2022, when you file your 2022 return in 2023, the child tax credit goes back to the lower amount of $2000, with a refundable amount that can be paid as the "additional child tax credit" as part of your income tax refund. The CTC for 2022 is for children up to the age of 16.
I never received any child tax credit for 2021 my son is now 3 years old I got my tax return of $1,800 and that's it. what are the steps for me finding out what happened or how to claim it
@mywiddleboy Are you sure you did not have $1800 on line 28 of your 2021 tax return? When you prepared the tax return you should have answered the questions about the advance child tax credit payments you received from July to December and then it would have put the other $1800 on line 28. Look at your Form 1040-----is it there?
Through TurboTax it fills that all in by itself
@mywiddleboy No, TurboTax does not fill all of that in for you "by itself." You were supposed to answer the questions in order to get the child tax credit. You may need to amend if you did it incorrectly. If you received those advance child tax credit payments then the IRS sent you letter 6419. You were supposed to answer questions about the amount in that letter. Then the other half of the child tax credit would have gone on line 28 of your Form 1040, and would have become part of your tax refund.
What you should have done:
Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit
The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you. It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021. Enter the information from that letter carefully.
The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040. Then it will calculate down to the refund you see on line 35a or the tax due on line 37.

And....did you claim your child as a dependent on your 2021 return? Did you enter the child's information, with the child's Social Security number?
Do you need to amend?

I am confused about your mention of receiving $1800-----do you mean you got a tax refund of $1800 after you filed your 2021 tax return? If so, that was the second half of your 2021 child tax credit. Did you work in 2021 and have any income from working?
The total amount of child tax credit you could receive for a child under the age of six was $3600. If you received the advance child tax credit payments during July to December---and it sounds like you did----then you could only receive another $1800 when you filed your tax return.
