Where do I enter "energy efficient home improvement credit".

In 2023 you should be able to take a deduction of 30% for "energy efficient home improvement credit". The credit options available in Turbotax do not include this deduction as an option. Did anyone else find where to take this deduction?

Look for Home Energy Credits under Deductions and Credits.   You can also search for energy credit (don't add an 's') and use the jump to link.  Open or continue your return, if you don't already have it open.  Then:

  • Select the Deductions & Credits tab.
  • Find the Your Home section.
  • Select the Start/Revisit button for Home Energy Credits.
  • On the Energy-Saving Home Improvements screen, answer Yes and Continue. Follow the instructions on the next screens.
    • The first part of the interview covers improvements like doors, windows, furnace, air conditioning, and heat pumps. If you're looking for other improvements like solar, geothermal, wind, and fuel cell, just keep going—we'll ask you about these soon.

Thanks for the help DawnC. I did look where you suggested and nothing appear to match what I need. I installed solar light tubes with solar LED lights that the vendor said qualify for the tax credit.

I am referring to this IRS document - https://www.irs.gov/instructions/i5695 and specifically skylights.

The product installed comes from here https://www.veluxusa.com/help/tax-credit/quiz/sun-tunnel-with-snl

Nothing in the Energy credit selection appears to match this option. When I select some of the options there the credit gets calculated much less than 30%.

One thing that does work is when I use the exterior windows option. That calculates the correct tax credit amount, but I am not sure that equates to solar tubes and LED solar lights in the tube.

Your solar lights qualify for the Residential Clean Energy Credit not the Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit.  According to the form 5695 Instructions, the Residential Clean Energy Credit is..."a credit of 30% of your costs of qualified solar electric property...,"  Further,  "Qualified solar electric property costs are costs for property that uses solar energy to generate electricity for use in your home located in the United States."

In the Home Energy Credits topic you will answer "Yes" to the "Residential Clean Energy" improvements question and enter the cost as "Solar Electric Property" costs.
