Where do I deduct personal property tax?

@jtoneill

Please read below whether you have real estate taxes or personal property taxes.

To enter your personal property tax:

  1. Log onto TurboTax.
  2. Type personal property taxes in the search bar and click on Jump to personal property taxes.
  3. Continue with the onscreen interview until complete.

Personal property tax is an annual tax imposed on movable assets—mobile homes, RVs, vehicles, boats, planes, etc. The portion of your vehicle's registration or license fee that's based on the value of the vehicle is considered a personal property tax.

Personal property tax is deductible if it is a state or local tax that is all of the following:

  • Charged on personal property
  • Based only on the value of the personal property
  • Charged on a yearly basis (even if collected more or less than once per year).

Property (real estate) tax is charged on immovable property—land and structures that are permanently attached to the ground such as a house, building, or land. If you own a home, you pay property (real estate) tax directly to your local tax assessor or indirectly with your monthly mortgage payment. See Where do I enter my real estate taxes?

Where do I deduct personal property tax?

I am looking for where to enter personal property tax on a SC return in TurboTax. The property is my car. I found it on the federal but can't find it on state (SC).

I found a place for property taxes for my home on my MI return, but I can't find it on the SC return. Does SC return have a place for this?

Thanks

Where do I deduct personal property tax?

There is no entry for these taxes on the South Carolina (SC) return. South Carolina's tax calculation starts with Federal Taxable Income, so there is no option to itemize or take the standard deduction.

Federal Taxable Income is calculated after taking the standard or itemized deductions

You can preview this calculation at the SC department of revenue HERE. Also, you can take a look at your SC return currently calculating in TurboTax, by following the instructions to Preview My 1040Once there, you'll see a tab to the top left for your SC state
