The child tax credit is $2000 for each child that you have as a dependent under the age of 17. If you use that full $2000 to reduce your tax bill then it's used up and a good deal because it reduced your taxes.
But if you don't need the full $2000 to reduce your tax bill then whatever portion you don't use can be refunded to you. That is the additional child tax credit.
If you are eligible for the refundable additional child tax credit it is added to line 28 of your Form 1040 automatically after you have entered your dependent child(ren) under the age of 17 and your income earned from working.
